Red, white and blue

We decided to celebrate the fourth at home this year as a family.  We sat and talked with the kids about why this day is important.  Talked about what it means to be free to choose and how blessed we are to have that right.
The scouts put up the flags all around the neighborhood.  It looked beautiful seeing them waving in the wind all down the street.  Such a neat sign of unity.
We made our first watermelon cake with whipped cream frosting, blueberries and strawberries.  It was really easy other than frosting it.  I think if I had maybe used a paper towel to first wipe off the watermelon it may have absorbed some of the excess juice and made it easier.  However it was super yummy and perfect on a hot AZ day.
We played all afternoon outside with the neighborhood kids in the bike wash until the sun went down.  Then we BBQ'd and watched movies until it was dark enough to head back outside. These are the best kind of days. I love that we have such awesome neighbors and as we headed outside everyone was setting up lawn chairs and getting ready.  Each family had gotten fireworks and we took turns doing shows for all the families in our corner of the street.
The kids ran up and down the street, sparklers in hand.  Hudson sat in my lap and panicked every time someone set off a firework that made a noise.  Poor baby.  Happy Fourth everyone!!!!
