So before sitting with the kids one Saturday morning watching cartoons I had never seen one of these. I have seen pillow pets a million times, everywhere and so I assumed when the commercial started that it was for those. Then a little jingle started and shots of moms tucking their kids in and then the children pressing a button and stars lit up their bedroom ceiling. Emma jumped off the couch and went running to the tv, practically yelling, "look Mom! look at stars!!" glued to the television. "Yeah what a cute nightlight Emma" I replied not thinking too much of it.
Well I apparently hadn't been watching close enough that day or I would have noticed the impact this infomercial had on my toddler. She started talking about Dream Lites to Deke and I all the time. Any time the commercial comes on she will fly across the house saying "dreamlites, dreamlites!" and stand mesmerized right in front of the screen grinning and pointing. There is more. After only about three times of seeing the commercial she had memorized the jingle for them. Now randomly she will go around singing the song. When the commercial comes on and she stands there staring and singing the theme song I wish that the jingle writers could see her and get a feel good moment about the effectiveness of their advertising at least in the two year old market. It is hilarious, but it gets worse. Last week I caught her and Avery reenacting the commercial while they were playing. Avery was tucking Emma into a pretend bed on the couch and then kissing her goodnight and leaving the room. Emma would then sit up and pretend to push a button on whatever stuffed animal was next to her and then look up and the ceiling. Avery would again enter from stage right and the two would simultaneously start singing the song together. I could hardly contain myself. Moments like this are just one of millions of constant examples of why I wanted to become a mother. As I headed off to finish dinner I could hear them making the switch to Avery being the kid and Emma the mom.
Emma is obviously in LOVE with this product, she tells me she wants the penguin, no the ladybug, no the turtle. I think this household is probably in need of one for the girls room. I saw them the other day at Walgreens so maybe next week the littlest girl and I will venture out to find her one to bring home. I kind of can't wait to take her because she has been so excited about it. It is really fun.
