Last summer the kids had their first taste of Thai food and this summer we decided to try some Ethiopian food. Deke had a lot of Ethiopian food when he was in DC on his mission. He really enjoyed it and has wanted to have some since he came home. We found a restaurant down by ASU that had good reviews, Cafe Lalibela. The menu had a glossary of terms which was nice so we could go over them with the kids.
The kids loved the idea of everyone eating from the same big platter. They brought out the Injera which is a sourdough tasting, crepe like bread. Traditionally you tear off a piece with your hands and scoop up different meats and veggies and eat it. When they first brought it out I was worried about the kids actually eating it. None of our kids are picky at all but there were all sorts of different spices that the kids had never had.
Well all I can say is they tried everything and we killed the whole platter. There was some lamb that was too spicy for everyone besides Deke but we ate everything else. The kids favorite things were Doro wat which is a chicken simmered in kibae (a spiced butter), Yekik Alicha, yellow split peas cooked with onions and herbs and most of all Ayeb, a mild crumbly cheese that they put on top of everything. It had a feta like consistency but a sweeter flavor it was really yummy.
I loved watching the kids faces as they tried each thing and kept going back for more.
It was really filling. We all enjoyed it so much we are going to try to find another Ethiopian restaurant to try to compare them. Yum.
